The Madrid Fruit and Vegetables Wholesale Central Market dates ultimately from 1935 when it was inaugurated in Legazpi Square. Madrid´s growth during the following decades, both in population as well as in business and commerce, compelled the local administrations to undertake new business structures according to the new social and economic demands.

The Madrid Fruit and Vegetables Wholesalers Association (ASOMAFRUT) was founded in 1978 in order to defend their members´general interests and represent them in whatever official or administrative context required. Nowadays, ASOMAFRUT is the reference of the sector in Madrid and the official representative with public administrations and any local, national or international organs.

On February 1st, 1983 the Madrid Fruit and Vegetables Wholesale Central Market was re-inaugurated in MERCAMADRID, the new Alimentary Unit and the biggest Wholesale Central Market in Spain, currently housing the Fish, Meat and Banana Markets too as well as an agro-alimentary Polyvalent warehouse along with some other peripheral infrastructures. From that moment on, the Madrid Fruit and Vegetables Wholesalers Association´s Head Office has been located inside MERCAMADRID Alimentary Unit.

Mercamadrid covers a 1,761,568 sq. metre surface and holds the Fruit and Vegetables Market, covering 124,400 sq. metres which include 6 warehouses 10,000 sq. metres each for the wholesale commercialization of fruit and vegetables. It is conveniently located close to M-40 Madrid ring road, just 12 km away from the city centre, 10 km from the international Madrid-Barajas Airport and the new Madrid Airport Aerial Cargo Loading Terminal, and well connected to the main national highways. Suppliers and retailers meet up everyday in the Fruit and Vegetables Central Market to provide 9 million people with fresh produce, average sales reaching 6 million kilos of fruit and vegetables daily.

ASOMAFRUT represents 129 wholesale companies, and more than 90% of the total number of wholesale companies located in the Fruit and Vegetables Central Market belong to it. From its foundation, the Association has been working on different areas in order to satisfy its members´ demands and needs, to raise public awareness of the activities carried out in the commercial context of the wholesale Central Market and to consolidate its presence in all kind of institutional, social and economic relevant forums. In the last years ASOMAFRUT has been elaborating and implementing a permanently updated and open-to-improvement Work Plan for the sake and benefit of its  members. Amongst the tasks included in this Plan, We put the stress on those related to: inner organisation and working procedures, Communication and Public Relations, training and employment policies, Central Market and Corporate Governance. The technological, social and procedural updating on behalf of ASOMAFRUT, both on internal as well as on external and corporative matters, has been really remarkable during the last few years.
